Flying high over the majestic peaks of the Peruvian Andes in the region of Lambayeque, you may catch the sight of women toiling away in the coffee plantations down below—women every bit as magnificent as the mountains that surround them. In addition to their genuine passion for coffee and the thoroughness devoted by them daily to their work, what unites these farmers is also the acclaimed “Café Femenino” program. Started in 2004 by 464 women, this unique initiative brings women coffee farmers together and enables them to take control of both their produce and their earnings (which is a huge achievement in an industry dominated by men!). Nowadays, thousands of women from 9 different countries are part of this foundation. Additional funds have already allowed the women participating in the program to complete a variety of substantial local community projects related to education, health promotion, equal opportunities and human rights.
